Momjan was the seat of a prehistoric fortress and was probably inhabited in Roman times as well (Castrum Mammilianum). It was mentioned for the first time in 1035 in an imperial document. People have lived in Momjan since prehistoric times, which we know because the remains of flint and stone tools were found in the Cingareli cave.
