Barbariga is a village located 15 km northwest of Vodnjan, and it got its name from the Venetian noble family Barbarigo, who owned properties in that area. The surrounding area was densely populated even in ancient times, as evidenced by numerous archaeological findings found on the sea coast and in the hinterland. The remains of a Roman villa from the 1st century were found on the seashore, and in the immediate vicinity the remains of an ancient oil mill for processing olives. On the very coast towards Peroj, there is Dragonera, where the remains of a villa inhabited from the 1st to the 8th century were recently discovered. The name of Cape Barbariga in the Middle Ages was Cape Cissana, after the name of the legendary city of Cissa, which disappeared into the sea in the 8th century.
