Valtura is a small town in Istria, located in the municipality of Ližnjan, just a few kilometers from Pula. It is best known for its proximity to the archeological site of Nezakcij, the capital of the Illyrian nation of Histri. Nearby is Šandalja, a system of several caves, named after the quarry of the same name. Back in Roman times, stone was exploited in that locality. Today, Šandalja is located in the Valtura Open Penitentiary. Due to the wealth of paleontological, paleolithic and paleoanthropological findings, which were found in 9-meter thick deposits, the locality occupies a leading position on European soil. To date, Šandalja I and II caves, located ten meters from each other, have been explored. The remains of a million-year-old Homo erectus incisor were found there. It is these data that speak of the oldest prehistoric man in Europe. Likewise, the oldest impact tool in Europe (a flint impactor) was also found on this site.
